Company Expects to Save Money While Reducing Energy Consumption
ARLINGTON, Vt. (June 12, 2018) – Vermont-based Mack Molding is more than just a leading custom plastics molder and supplier of contract manufacturing services, it is an environmental steward with a keen focus on energy conservation, waste reduction, land preservation and management, and environmental education and awareness.
Since January 2017, in partnership with Efficiency Vermont, the Company has instituted a number of changes at all three of its Vermont facilities that have resulted in annual energy savings of more than $115,000. This represents more than 1 million kWh of annual electricity savings and includes rightsizing of a transformer, new interior and exterior LED lighting, boiler and compressor upgrades, putting ceramic heater bands on molding presses and installing night setbacks in its Headquarters building.
“We are always looking for ways to make operational improvements while reducing costs,” said President Jeff Somple. “These projects, however, offer a unique opportunity to not only do what is right for Mack, but what is right for our Vermont Community. Coupled with initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint through resource conservation, recycling, waste reduction and environmentally friendly purchasing practices, we’re helping to ensure Vermont continues to be a great place to work, live and play well into the future.”
In addition to projects focused on energy conservation, the Company also recently further improved its use of green cleaning supplies by switching from single use bottles to bulk concentrates and reusable bottles that will help reduce costs and the amount of plastic bottles used. Speaking of bottles, Mack has also installed new water fountains with automatic bottle fillers and has already kept more than 85,000 water bottles out of the waste stream. Additionally, the Company is now recycling the more than 1 million zip ties it uses each year, reducing nylon waste by more than 2,000 pounds annually. Other recent projects included building and installing bat boxes at Mack’s Headquarters to help combat white nose disease and helping to mitigate recent ice-jam related flooding on the Black River near its Cavendish Plant.
Improvements also have been made to the community garden at the Company’s Headquarters. Employees can take advantage of the more than 20 raised garden beds, captured rain water and gardening tools to grow everything from strawberries to corn. Mack also is an Environmental Leader in Vermont’s Green Business Program, a voluntary program that provides resources to Vermont business on how to go above and beyond compliance with existing environmental regulations, using pollution prevention strategies and implementation of best management practices.
